This region has great biological diversity that includes more than 80% of the plant species of the entire Yucatan Peninsula, plus 350 species bird and nearly 100 species of mammals. It is a tropical rainforest ecosystem that is home to several species of higher vertebrates status conservation in Mexico, like the jaguar (Panthera onca), tapir (Tapirus bairdii) white-lipped peccary (Tayassu peccary), howler monkey (Alouatta pigra), king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) and elegant eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), among many others.
